Lion Dance Troupe Delights With Fun, Fellowship, Fitness

Perhaps it’s because the nonprofit orga- nization — which was es- tablished in 2001 by a group of lion dancers — keeps its mission “to promote Chi- nese lion dancing in Hawai‘i through fun, fellowship and fitness” at the head of all its endeavors.
The Chinese New Year is Jan. 22, which means Ha- wai‘i Lion Dance Associ- ation is busy parading the streets of Honolulu.
“For about two weeks be- fore and after Chinese New Year, we perform at approxi- mately 40-50 events all over Oʻahu, many of which take place in metro Honolulu,” shares Hawai‘i Lion Dance Association president Ricky Lee.
Lee notes members of the association are encour- aged to never lose sight of the purpose of Hawai‘i Lion Dance Association and to live by its motto “zi qiang bu xi,” which, according to Lee, translates to “never stop improving yourself.”
In fact, the organization has one at 9 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, at Ala Moana Cen- ter. Hawai‘i Lion Dance Association will be one of several lion dance groups roaming the mall and mak- ing stops at various stores.
