Duke’s Oceanfest kicked off in Waikīkī on Aug. 20.

A Week Packed With Contests For Duke’s Oceanfest
 The father of modern-day surfing would be pleasantly surprised at how many cat- egories are featured in the weeklong event, which runs through Aug. 28.
To the World Champion- ship Tour, now on its ninth contest in Tahiti.
For example, Brazil’s Filipe Toledo has over 53,000 points and California’s Grif- fin Colapinto only 36,800 points prior to finishing heats in Tahiti.
The festivities include much more than longboard- ing and shortboarding, tan- dem, paddleboarding and standup surf racing.

Normally, the chances of Colapinto going from No. 5 to No. 1 in a single contest would be slim to say the least. But now? Any of the top five have a chance at history in just a single day.
