its annual Science Sym- posium. The highly antic- ipated event featured fun, interactive sessions for girls from grades 5-9 and par- ticipants learned about and experimented with engaging STEAM applications across an array of areas including veterinary medicine, cook- ing and architecture. All the sessions were provided by professionals in their re- spective fields and what the Academy called “some of the best teachers girls can learn from.”
The symposium also fea- tured sessions for parents, including the keynote talk delivered by the president of the East-West Center, Su- zanne Puanani Varas-Lum, as well as collaborative talks around polarizing topics in- cluding social media and vaping, which are important topics for parents today as their children navigate these and other pressing issues. According to research by Fortune magazine and called out by the team at Sacred Hearts Academy, every one of the top-10 paying college majors and corresponding career fields currently are in STEAM fields. For families looking to support their daughters’ long-term well-being, these trends show that exposure to STEAM-related careers is crucial.
“Current research show(s) that STEAM careers in the U.S. in the past 10 years have grown at three times the pace of non-STEAM pro- fessions,” Schroeder says. “Through the next decade, these are projected to con- tinue growing at this pace. At Sacred Hearts Academy we believe every girl should be given the opportunity to learn and develop this inter- est early on.”
