New Pacific Training Center
“Chaminade was an obvious choice when we were looking for partners in this part of the world because
of its stellar reputation, strong community partnerships and decades of service in Hawai‘i and across the Pacific region.”
Chaminade University partnered with the United Nations to launch CIFAL Honolulu Centre, a new Pa- cific region training center that will provide innovative development opportunities, and tackle issues such as climate change, poverty and other urgent global issues. To celebrate the launch, the center offered a series of free lectures with Lt. Gov. Josh Green and Hōkūle‘a ca- noe master navigator Nainoa Thompson.

“This new center will work with United Nations experts and local stakeholders to develop targeted education and training that addresses some of the sustainable de- velopment challenges facing Hawai‘i and Pacific Island nations, including climate change, public health and social inequalities,” states Chaminade president Lynn Babington. “We couldn’t be more excited about this new partnership with the United Nations.”
that the center will serve as a place to spotlight the need for community-focused cli- mate action.
“We are seeking to leverage the expertise and resourc- es of the United Nations in service to local people and local organizations that are helping to create more sus- tainable communities in Ha- wai‘i and across the Pacific. To do this, we are partnering with the private sector and civil society to amplify their good work and help address any gaps in knowledge, ed- ucation and training to sup- port our shared sustainable development goals.”

Future lectures will pres- ent timely and important dis- cussions on various topics related to leadership, health, education and sustainability in Hawai‘i.
Chaminade provost Lance Askildson says the UN train- ing and research center is an extension of the school’s service-oriented mission.
As part of the UN collab- oration, Chaminade Univer- sity is poised to host a CI- FAL Global Network annual meeting and international conference later this fall.
