Local Companies Gather In East O‘ahu To Mālama ‘Āina
(Right and facing page) Earlier this month, Trust for Public Land celebrated its annual A Day On The Land event with volunteers from local companies. The community came together to care for the East O‘ahu ‘āina at Hāwea heiau complex and Keawāwa wetland. Participants removed invasive species, planted natives ones, and helped with
other wetland enhancement and maintenance work.
The property, which was once a place of worship, farming and fishing,
now serves as a place to celebrate and perpetuate traditional Hawaiian cultural practices while protecting the habitat of the Hawaiian Moorhen, an endangered water bird. The workday was attended by volunteers from AES, Alexander
& Baldwin Foundation, Capitol Consultants, Central Pacific Bank, Dentons US LLP, G70, Hawai‘i Gas, Howard Hughes Corp./Ward Village Foundation, James Campbell Co.
