Kalani High Senior Helps Launch CARE Closet Initiative

When Vivian Chang came to Hawai‘i before her first year in high school, she was a little apprehensive. Born and raised in Vietnam, she attended an international pri- vate school before her family moved to the United States.
“We provide a way for ev- eryone to get information in one place,” she says. “It was founded off the idea that a lot of people don’t know where to look for resources. The amount of information out there is overwhelming.”
This includes everything from wigs and beanies to mas- tectomy bras and the like.
Now a senior at Kalani High, she’s completely en- grained herself in her school community as part of the HOSA Future Health Profes- sionals, which led to growing her impact around East O‘ahu and beyond. Through her vol- unteer work with the club and community events, Chang met Joanne Hayashi, founder of nonprofit Breast Cancer Hawai‘i.
Since 2016, Breast Can- cer Hawai‘i has been a vital online resource for survivors and those going through treat- ment. Started by two breast cancer survivors, the nonprof- it publishes links to relevant articles, local support group meetings, events and more — all to help the community.
“It’s economically and en- vironmentally friendly,” she adds. “We help people re- duce waste and reuse prod- ucts. It eliminates patients having to go out and buy these items, which a lot of times are not covered by insurance.”

Now, Chang and the rest of the Breast Cancer Hawai‘i volunteers are excited to announce the launch of the CARE (Community Access to Reusable Equipment) Clos- et initiative, which connects current breast cancer patients in need of treatment-relat- ed items with survivors who wish to donate new or gently used goods.
