Over the past two years, the group has met regular- ly and has identified policy pathways and adaptation solutions to combat the chronic coastal erosion and beach loss plaguing the North Shore, extend- ing from Kaʻena Point to Velzyland.
Based on a series of six meetings that started in 2021 and continued un- til April 2022, the work- ing group has developed a summary report titled Adaptive Coastal Manage- ment Recommendations, Actions and Strategies. As part of the report, three coastal erosion hot spots on the North Shore were identified: Sunset/Kam- mies, Chun’s/Laniākea and Mokulēʻia.

Due to nearly a third of the beachfront homes on Oʻahu’s North Shore be- ing vulnerable to ongoing erosion along the coastline, the North Shore Coastal Resilience Working Group is urging government lead- ers, policymakers and com- munity members to take steps to help address beach conservation, coastal pro- tection and community re- silience.
The working group is composed of residents and landowners, state and county government offi- cials, coastal scientists, en- gineers, planners and non- profit leaders.
“We had to step forward to take action.”

“We could no longer stand by as spectators and watch homes fall into the ocean along one of the most valued coastlines in the world,” states the chair of Surfrider’s Oʻahu Chap- ter, Elizabeth Benyshek.
The group also discussed coastal adaptation path- ways, challenges and ex- plored the relative merits, costs, benefits and feasibil- ity of various solutions.
