School Supplies Are Needed
No child should go with- out school supplies that help make their education experiences productive. The Central O‘ahu com- munity has the opportuni- ty to join Helping Hands Hawai‘i’s Ready to Learn program in donating school supplies or monetary gifts to purchase materials to aid children from low-income and houseless families.
These items will create school supply kits con- taining an assortment of the most common things recommended in back-to- school lists. Each kit costs approximately $30, and the goal is to distribute 1,000 free kits to students.
For check donations, make it payable to Helping Hands Hawai‘i, and mail to Ready to Learn Pro- gram, c/o Helping Hands Hawai‘i, 2100 N. Nimitz Hwy., Honolulu, HI 96819. (Write Ready to Learn in the memo line.)
For in-person donations, visit the organization’s Community Clearinghouse (2100 N. Nimitz Hwy., Honolulu) from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays (closed noon-1 p.m. for lunch) and the third Saturday of each month 9 a.m.-1 p.m. No appointments are necessary and donations will be ac- cepted until July 15.
Items needed for the 2022-23 school year include backpacks, ballpoint pens, composition books, cray- ons, dry erase markers and earbuds with a microphone. Also needed are erasers, face mask, folder papers, glue, hand sanitizers and yellow highlighters.
Ready to Learn was founded in 1998 in partner- ship with the late U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye and his wife Maggie.
Other items on the list are markers in assorted colors, colored pencils, No. 2 pen- cils, black permanent mark- ers, two-pocket portfolios and USB flash drives.
