usband and wife Ken and Jewelz Lee know full well how martial arts can positively impact a per-
son’s life. The Lees, who call Mililani home, thought Waipi‘o — specifically 94-530 Ukeʻe St. —would be the perfect place to open a training facility and celebrated with the grand opening of United MMA Hawai‘i in 2015. Though closed since last March, in its heyday, United MMA offered classes for all ages with a focus on self-defense.
“For us, the philosophy is that martial arts is a life skill,” says Jewelz. “We give children that head start in life, learning to de- fend themselves, and empowering them with that knowledge of self-defense boosts their self-confidence, which trickles into so many different areas of their lives.
“Even mom, who is loading up groceries, she’s not always going to have her husband or son there to defend her.”
The added bonus that United MMA of- fers, though, is that all the activities can be done as a family. Parents can learn tech-
