Poet Receives State Honors

Taylor Cozloff of Wahi- awā has been named as the 2021 Hawaiʻi Poetry Out Loud champion.
Cheever, a sophomore from Punahou School.
Hawaiʻi State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, and state coordinator Honolulu Theatre for Youth, recently announced the award.
“Poetry has been one of my best friends for so much of my life,” states Cozloff. “Whether it is reading it, writing it or reciting it, po- etry has been a way for me to make sense of the world. I am so grateful for Poet- ry Out Loud because it has allowed me to grow closer to poetry and understand it better.”
Cozloff represented Kamehameha Schools Kapālama in Honolulu and won in a competition of eight students from high schools on Kauaʻi and Oʻa- hu. Because of the pandem- ic, the Hawaiʻi finals were done as a video submission contest earlier this month. The first runner-up was Er- isan Awaya, a senior from Mid-Pacific Institute and last year’s winner. The third- place recipient was Isabel
