    Highlight On In-person Learning

Located at 1403 California Ave. in Wahiawā, Kamala- ni Academy is one of only a few schools, particularly public ones, that still oper- ates in-person classes, says principal Amanda Langston. Situated in buildings along Wahiawā Heights that previ- ously housed the former Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic School, Kamalani Academy is a tuition-free, public char- ter school of more than 180 students in grades kindergar- ten through eight.

Besides offering in-person classes, the school places an emphasis on motivating young people to lead and care for their communities.
 She estimates that about 85% of the students spend all of their class time on campus. It also has school sessions five days a week.
Kamalani Academy fea- tures an arts-integration cur- riculum using drama, music and other creative ways to teach traditional academ- ic subjects. In addition, the school also has a Hawaiian focus, and students learn the language, culture, music and dance, school officials share. The academy current- ly also has open enrollment this month for the 2021-22 school year.
 Langston says the school has been able to accomplish the high level of in-person learning through strict safety procedures, such as install- ing plexiglass barriers, use of face masks at all times, having lunch areas outside and more.
