How long have you been in practice?
I started my orthopedic practice here in Hawaii in 1992. I am currently an orthopedic surgeon at All Access Ortho Urgent Care along with Dr. Gary Blum.
When did the facility open and where is it located?
The facility opened in November 2013 and is located at the Hale Pawaa Professional Building at 1401 S. Beretania St.
Can you give some background about the facility?
All Access Ortho is the first orthopedic urgent care in the state of Hawaii. The intent is to provide patients with easy access to orthopedic care with extended weekday hours, weekend hours and walk-in appointments. The
Urgent Care is part of an all-encompassing complement of orthopedic services at the Hale Pawaa Professional Building. Hale Pawaa now provides all services that a patient could require for complete orthopedic care.
In addition to All Access Ortho, Hale Pawaa is the home of Orthopedic Associates of Hawaii. OAHI provides orthopedic subspecialty services for joint reconstruction, orthopedic tumor surgery, foot and ankle, sports medicine, hand and upper extremity reconstruction, and orthopedic trauma surgery. All of OAHI’s physicians have completed subspecialty fellowship training and are nationally and internationally recognized. They are also members of the faculty at the University of Hawaii School of Medicine and provide team coverage for University of Hawaii Intercollegiate Athletics.
Minimally Invasive Surgery of Hawaii is a state-ofthe-art outpatient surgery center that is also located within the building. MIS Hawaii is dedicated to providing the most technologically advanced orthopedic facilities and equipment in the state. The center uses the Arthrex Synergy Arthroscopy System, which allows streaming of surgeries to consultants anywhere in the world. Information can be transferred seamlessly between providers to maximize a patient’s care. Also, with a focus on performing surgeries with the most minimally invasive incisions, pain is lessened and recovery is enhanced.
The Pacific Forum is a surgical training center located adjacent to the surgery center that provides hands on surgical simulation for surgeons around the world. Video feeds from the surgery center allow the participants to watch a live surgery and then practice those techniques on cadaveric models. The first laboratory training session is scheduled for the first week of February, when a group of orthopedic surgeons from South Korea will travel to Hawaii to learn the most up-to-date procedures in foot and ankle surgery. Hawaii now will be an international educational training destination for surgeons worldwide.
In addition to these facilities, Hale Pawaa provides state-of-the-art MRI and CT scan imaging, clinical laboratories, pharmacy, physical therapy, hand and occupational therapy, worker’s compensation care, pain management, orthopedic bracing and performance training. Essentially, the building provides the equivalent of an orthopedic institute and is the only building in Hawaii where such all-encompassing services are provided under one roof.
What kind of equipment and services does All Access Ortho offer?
It is a full-service orthopedic facility with state-ofthe-art electronic medical records, digital X-ray, and ultrasound technology for diagnosis and treatment. The facility has the ability to treat orthopedic fractures, lacerations, sprains and strains, and dislocations. The staff includes two fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeons with specialty training in both upper-extremity and hand injuries as well as sports medicine injuries, and three specialty-trained physician’s assistants. The facility is designed to streamline access to further diagnostic testing, such as MRI scans, CT scans, laboratory testing, as well as treatments involving physical and occupational therapy and surgery. Patients can be seen quickly and efficiently without long emergency room waits, and further referrals and treatments are set up seamlessly.
Is there need for an orthopedic urgent care facility in Hawaii?
Yes. The rationale for opening such a facility was to relieve the current burden on our emergency rooms so that conditions that require true emergency care can be treated expediently. Injuries that are less serious now can be treated on an urgent basis with providers who are specialists. Immediate access to specialty care allows patients to have their conditions treated with the utmost in expertise and efficiency.
All Access Ortho will serve patients of all ages with orthopedic trauma, sports-related injuries and conditions, and worker’s injuries. Injuries and conditions of the neck and back, shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand, hips, knees, foot and ankle can be treated immediately.
All Access Ortho provides immediate walk-in access to specialty care. Primary care physicians now have a facility to refer patients for easy and immediate access to expert orthopedic care.
