New Traffic Signal Makes Waipahu Intersection Safer For All
The intersection of Waipahu and Honowai streets near Waipahu Elementary just got a little bit safer, thanks to a new traffic signal installation.
State Sen. Clarence Nishihara (Waipahu, Crestview, Manana, Pearl City, Pacific Palisades) and City Councilman Ron Menor (Waikele, Waipahu, Village Park, Makakilo, Kunia, Mililani Town) worked with Waipahu Neighborhood Board and state Department of Transportation to see this project through.

“I live just a few blocks from this intersection,” stated Nishihara in a release. “I’ve seen firsthand too many near misses.
“This light has been needed for a very long time, so I’m pleased that residents in the area will finally have added safety when crossing the street.”
Interest was sparked back in 2009, when a traffic study showed that high pedestrian crossings in the area warranted a traffic signal.
“We did everything we could to prioritize this project and bring this to the community,” stated city transportation services director Mike Formby. “It’s really part of a complete streets effort. It’s part of making sure the pedestrians are safe when they cross.”
