Near-perfect Pitching Helps Mililani Claim Softball Title
It’s the journey, not the destination, that matters most in the post-season.
Mililani softball standout Aubree Kim enjoyed both while overcoming arm problems to win the Division I state tournament.
“It’s always sore,” said Kim, who went 3-0 and allowed just one earned run and six hits in 21 innings as the Trojans defeated Maryknoll, Mid-Pacific and Campbell en route to winning the state title. “When I was out there, I would forget about it. I was trying to focus. The state tournament was the most enjoyable experience. When we actually won, it was the best feeling in the world.”
For her efforts, Kim was named the tourney’s most outstanding player. Just a sophomore, her future looks bright. Kim recently took some time to visit with MidWeek‘s Central Oahu Islander.
What is your earliest softball-related memory? I was in first grade when I started playing, and I was 8 or 9 when I began to pitch. I remember that I wasn’t really good at all, and there were a lot of others who were better than I was. As I got older, I improved each year.
Who’s had the biggest impact on your life? My mom (Shere) because she supports me in everything I do. Even in softball, she always told me I didn’t have to play if I didn’t want to – but I wanted to play.
What area of your game will you focus on during the off-season? I want to have improved the pitches I have now and hopefully add a few more. And I want to get more in shape so I can last longer.
Who is Mililani’s best “practice player”? That would be Jade Yadao-Valdez (OIA Red West Player of the Year).
What Internet site do you frequent the most? Twitter.
What is your least favorite household chore? Anything, really. I don’t really like to do anything (related to chores)!
What movie could you watch over and over? Divergent.
Who are three of your favorite musical artists? I can’t really pick a favorite, but I like Lana Del Rey.
How do you like to spend your free time? I like to go shopping the most, and I like to eat, and go to the beach, and do things with my friends.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Hopefully, having graduated from college and with a job. I’m not sure what I want to do.
You’re stuck on the island of Kahoolawe and can have an endless supply of just one food. What would it be? Sushi.
What celebrity would you most like to meet? (Actor and singer) Zac Efron.
