MCF Contest For Young Artists

With its eye on a future “culture and arts hale” for the area, Maunalua Communities Foundation is fostering some creativity now with its annual MCF art contest.

All creative kids in grades K-8 are urged to submit their drawings by next Wednesday on the theme “What I love about Independence Day at Maunalua Bay.” The entries (on 8 1/2-by-11-inch white paper) should be mailed by Feb. 12, unfolded, to: c/o Elizabeth Reilly, 7177 Kamilo St., Honolulu, HI 96825. On the back, provide name, age, address, phone, school, title and parent signature. At stake is a $200 cash prize for the first-place winner and the chance to see his or her artwork on all Independence Day T-shirts and other event promotions for the July 4, 2014 and 2015 fireworks celebrations.

Contest chairwoman Natalie Iwasa will work with judges to pick the top three entries, which the public can then vote for online at mcfhawaii.org between Feb. 18 and 23. Judges are former Hanauma Bay manager Alan Hong, MCF co-president Eliza-beth Reilly, Maunalua band’s Bobby Moderow Jr., and marine and wildlife artist Patrick Ching.

The winner will be announced Feb. 28 and posted on the bulletin board at Koko Marina Center.
