Models include active members of the Native Hawaiian arts communi- ty, and music will be provided by local artists and musicians. There also will be a special honoring of artist Keone Nunes, who will receive the Community Spirit Award from First People Fund.
The event, which will be emceed by Vicky Holt Takamine and Robert Cazimero, helps MAMo with its mission to raise awareness of Native Hawaiian cultural principles and values, as applied to Native Hawaiian art within the community and beyond the shores of Hawaii.
“The Wearable Art Show is a beautiful reminder that art is not just for your walls, but also to be worn and also adorn your body like a tattoo,” says Holt Takamine, PA‘I Foundation executive director.
MAMo, which initially started as a month-long celebration, is a series of events from April to June showcasing more than 50 Native Hawaiian artists, designers, painters, weavers, photographers, carvers and more. It was established 10 years ago by PA‘I Foundation as a community-based effort to celebrate the depth, breadth and diversity of the Native Hawaiian arts community, and to create economic opportunities for Native Hawaiian artists and cultural practitioners.
Doors and a silent auction open at 5:30 p.m., and the show starts at 7:30. A trunk show will follow at Fresh Cafe Downtown (1111 Nuuanu Ave.). Tickets cost $20, $35 and $60, and are available by calling Hawaii Theatre Box Office at 528-0506 or online at hawaiitheatre.com. For more information, visit maoliartsmonth.org.
