Making A Joyous Noise At St. Pat’s

The Honolulu Chorale will present a free public concert of traditional, seasonal songs and music from a Renaissance Christmas at 7 p.m. Friday in Kaimuki.

Staged at St. Patrick Catholic Church, the program will include O Come, O Come Emmanuel – in English and as the original Gregorian chant.

Considered one of the longest-performing community choruses in the state, the 45-member chorale attracts all ages and ethnic groups, and East Oahu residents make up about half of voices. Music director Don Conover, a lifelong singer and musician, lives in Kaimuki, for example. President Sandra Edwards is a Palolo resident, and stage director Ernest Harada lives in Kaimuki.

Guest performers Dec. 6 are the Sacred Hearts Academy Select and Concert choirs, director Alex Schumacker, cellist and Iolani junior Shuzo Hamada, concert harpist Shareen Lum Taba, guitarist Wayne Takamine, bassist Benjamin Fairfield and percussionist Ira Wong. All are prepared to bring you a repertoire of Silent Night (in Hawaiian, English and German), Carol of the Bells (Ukrainian), We Need a Little Christmas (from Broadway), African Noel (Liberian), Hodie Christus Natus Est (Latin), Riu, Riu, Chiu (Spanish), Noel Nouvelet (French), Mele Kalikimaka, White Christmas, The Hallelujah Chorus (audience participation) and We Wish You a Merry Christmas (arranged by Robert S. Hines).
