KCC Culinary Arts Adding ‘Dash Of Aloha’
The culinary arts chefs and faculty at Kapiolani Community College are making it easier for residents to follow through on New Year’s resolutions to lose weight and eat healthy.
They have compiled an array of sweet treats (with nutritional values listed), healthy alternatives, tips from experts and seasonality charts for buying local in A Sweet Dash of Aloha, which is a companion guide to the best-selling A DASH of Aloha: Healthy Hawaii Cuisine and Lifestyle.
Samplings from chefs Sharon Kobayashi, Alyssa Moreau and Carol Nardello will be a highlight of a KCC book promotion set for 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Kahala Mall Whole Foods store.
Ensuring the people of Hawaii eat healthy is the basis of the book, which is considered an excellent resource for Island families especially because of the childhood obesity concerns here and the many multi-generational households where adults are looking for healthy ways to cut their sugar or fat intake.
Sweet treat recipes that may appeal to the local palate include such items as Chocolate-Dipped Macaroons, Gluten-Free Lilikoi Bars and Almond Thumbprint Cookies.
A Sweet Dash of Aloha is available for $15.95 at bookstores, and also from the publisher, Watermark Publishing, whose website is bookshawaii.net; or by phone at 587-7766.
