Kapolei ‘Spartea’ Helps Girls Afford Prom
Prom day 2014 is a ways off, but there’s a Kapolei beauty parlor planning for the season well ahead of time. While some young ladies will be dressed and ready, what happens when others don’t have the resources to afford a gown and accessories?
That very concern prompted Scarlett Godinez-Dumadag, owner of Beautiville Salon, Spa & Beautique (525 Farrington Hwy. Ste. 102) to host a Prom Dress “Spartea” (mix of Spa, Tea and Party).
The Spartea happens July 28 from 1 to 5 p.m. During that time, the public is invited to drop off gently used dresses, handbags, shoes, accessories and unused makeup at the spa. Meanwhile, guests who have pre-registered (promdressdrivespartea.eventbrite.com) and paid the $10 entry fee will receive a gift certificate for the spa, a swag bag and a chance to win door prizes, while enjoying tea and refreshments and visits to pampering stations.
Though this will be the first prom event Beautiville is hosting, Godinez-Dumadag said the spa always has supported West Oahu high schools through donations of services and products.
“We feel there is a great need to support the West Oahu community,” she added. “From my personal experience, coming from a financially disadvantaged home, it was challenging to cover costs for prom, so I took on the role of prom chairwoman for my Farrington High School junior and senior year. Attending prom is an important milestone.”
Beautiville plans to hold a second dress drive next year in January, with students getting to “shop” for the dresses for free in February, prior to prom season. The dresses will go to Kapolei, Campbell, Waianae, Waipahu and Nanakuli high schools, and to American Renaissance Academy and Island Pacific Academy.
“We would be very blessed to have at least 100 dress donations,” noted Godinez-Dumadag. “We will work with counselors from the aforementioned West Oahu schools and get help with selection based on students’ financial needs.”
