Kapolei Girls Soccer Team Setting Sights On State Title
“Businesslike” is the term that describes the typical Kapolei girls soccer practice. That approach was never more evident than last week for midfielder Kelli Fryxell and her teammates as they looked to put their disappointing loss to Kaiser in the OIA tournament firmly behind them.
“We were really upset we lost and that we didn’t get first place in the OIA,” Fryxell said. “We’re fired up now. We don’t like losing. We’re very, very ready for states. I think we can make it to the championship game if we work our butts off and never give up.”
Kapolei enters this week’s Division I state championships with an 11-2 mark, having only been defeated by Campbell and Kaiser. Fryxell is one of the big reasons why, as she helps anchor one of the state’s best defenses. She recently took some time away from the prac-tice field and her studies to visit with MidWeek‘s West Oahu Islander.
What is your earliest soccer-related memory? I had a super good coach (Danny Gonzales) when I was a kid. I remember he was real strict and he made me run with the ball over my head for not trapping the ball right. Everyone laughs about it now.
Who’s had the biggest impact on your life? My dad (Dale). I always want to make him proud. He’s always been very supportive of me.
What area of your game did you focus on during the off-season? My footwork and learning how to get past people one-versus-one.
What’s the most important thing you’ve learned through soccer? That you can never get down on yourself and that you always need to work through things. Getting down on yourself only makes it harder.
Who is Kapolei’s best “practice player” — the girl who puts out the best effort? Alyssa Yoshida. She’s only a freshman, and she plays like a captain. She always works hard to score and never gives up, even when she’s hurt.

What is your least favorite household chore? I hate taking out the garbage. It always falls on me.
What movie could you watch over and over? She’s The Man. It’s a soccer movie.
