Introducing Hawaii’s New First Lady

Favorite place to shop: I enjoy shopping, especially stores with coupons and sales.

Favorite fashion accessory: I have three — my wedding ring, a Ming’s Jewelry bracelet that was a gift from David and a pearl necklace that my mother purchased in Japan. They are all timeless pieces. I’ve been wearing them for years.

Election Day (Nov. 4) outfit: Adrianna Papell blue 3/4-sleeve dress from Nordstrom “I wanted the color blue because blue is our campaign color, and I wanted to celebrate all of the work our volunteers had put into our campaign,” says the first lady. “Even though when I bought the dress, I didn't know what the outcome was going to be.”

Favorite beauty product: It’s a hair product from Paul Brown Salon — Hapuna Beach Aragon Oil.

What is something you can’t live without: My family, including our pet cat. They always make me laugh, even during those long days of the campaign.

What is something you own that you think every person should have? Microfiber cloths — they’re the best for cleaning. You can find it anywhere.

Favorite CD: I don’t have a particular favorite CD. I enjoy a variety of music: Jake Shimabukuro, Brother Noland, Yo Yo Ma, John Legend, Alicia Keys, The Piano Guys.

Favorite book: David and Goliath by Malcolm Gladwell — for obvious reasons. The Moral Imperative of School Leadership by Michael Fullan — it was required reading for my administrative training and it sets the foundation for school leadership.

Favorite movie: Recently I saw a movie called Ike: Knowledge is Everywhere. It’s about education in Hawaii and the power of collaboration and communities working together. It was inspiring to see how students succeed with the support of teachers, administrators and the community. It was directed by Matthew Nagato.

Favorite TV show: West Wing — It’s a show about senior staff members at the White House dealing with daily political challenges.

Hobbies: I enjoy reading anything — books, magazines.

Favorite meal you prepare for your family: I have a favorite dish that I’ve been making for family potlucks — kamaboko tempura. It’s a recipe I found in the Pearl City Community Church Cookbook.
