What’s Playing at Aloha International Piano Festival

Aloha International Piano Festival runs June 6-14 at Hawaii Convention Center. With 50 students and a handful of professional pianists performing, there is a lot to see and hear. All of it is open to the public and most sessions are free (some require nominal fees).

Here, MidWeek provides a breakdown of the 10th annual festival’s schedule of events.

Saturday, June 6

Throughout the day, catch young pianists competing for festival honors in different age categories, followed by young artists and amateurs.

Sixteen-year-old Ryota Yamazaki makes his Hawaii debut in this special Aloha International Piano Festival 10th Anniversary Opening Concert.

The night features performances from winners of this year’s festival competition.

Oberlin Conservatory professor and pianist Haewon Song conducts a master class with students from the Piano Academy.

To celebrate the festival’s 10th anniversary, the festival’s guest artists will perform a “dance journey” that will feature: Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite, Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances, Dvorak’s Slavonic Dances and Brahms’ Hungarian Dances.

Pianist and faculty member at The New School Thomas Sauer conducts a workshop that explores the topic, “Form, Style and Performance” in Mozart’s Piano Sonatas.

Friday, June 12

This morning session offers an opportunity for students and the public to engage with the festival’s guest artists.

Sunday, June 14 4 P.M.

$30 or $10 for students
This 10th anniversary Jubilee Extravaganza will present encore performances of some of the most memorable pieces performed at the first festival in 2006, to last year’s. Be on the lookout for favorites such as Pianomania, Tango Extravaganza, Gershwin Extravaganza and more.
