Nancy and Yasu Oshiro are experiencing a cabbage epidemic in their Kaneohe backyard garden — which means there will be “kalua pig and cabbage for everyone.” At night, they explained to their son-in-law, the big leaves close around the center of the plant tightly, which helps it grow. The family used to raised pigs on their Kaneohe farm, which was confiscated during World War II. Once, while hauling slop from city restaurants and hotels for his piggery, Yasu recalled, his truck lost its brakes and crashed into the mountain on Old Pali Road. (They survived and fixed the truck.) Photo from Steve Holck.
