Fireworks Cancelled For July 4

Lack of funding has forced the cancellation of the 2014 Independence Day at Maunalua Bay Festival.

“We are sorry to disappoint the community who enjoys this event, but we cannot commit to spend money we don’t have,” stated Win Schoneman, president of Maunalua Communities Foundation, which is $45,000 short of the required funding.

This isn’t the first time insufficient cash cancelled the fireworks show. Last year, the event was initially called off, but a last-minute anonymous patron saved the show by donating half the event’s total cost. MCF tried unsuccessfully to find sponsorships for this year.

The show is scheduled to return in 2015, assuming the necessary funds are raised and enough manpower is available. To offer help, call 383-6632.
