Enter Statewide Pie Contest
The 2015 Hawaii State Farm Fair doesn’t open until July 11-12 at Kualoa Ranch, but feelers are out in the community now to find who makes the best pie.
Sponsored by Big City Diner, the Best Local Pie contest is accepting recipes until June 20 to Hawaii Farm Bureau, P.O. Box 253, Kunia, HI 96759. The three best pies will be announced July 3, and live onsite judging July 11 at the fair will decide the best in the state. (Last year’s winner was former Kapolei culinary arts teacher Cynthia Pratt with her Lemony Ginger Fresh Pineapple Pie.)
At stake here is a blue ribbon and cash prize of $500, $200 gift certificate from BCD and $100-value Hawaiian Host gift basket for first place. Second place gets $200 cash, a $100 BCD gift card and $50 gift basket; third place gets $100, $50 gift card and $50 gift basket.
Finalists (amateur bakers age 21 and older) must bring two baked pies to the farm fair for judging.
The distinguished panel is looking for use of local ingredients (40 percent), taste (40), aesthetic quality (10) and creativity (10).
