Construction Closures For Makapuu Trail
Hikers should take note of scheduled closures through July because of construction on Makapuu Lighthouse Trail.
The $2.7-million renovation looks to repave the trail, reconstruct broken rock walls, replace metal culverts and install four new lookout spots, as well as conduct other maintenance work on the well-used hiking spot.
Closure dates include Feb. 23-27 and March 2-5, with more set tentatively for July 20-24 and 27-28. Work began in early February.
The park is open on weekends throughout construction, even during closure weeks, and one side of the trail will be again open to the public on week-days after March 5. Hikers should note that there may be delays while machinery is moved and to exercise extra caution during this time.
Neither Makapuu Lookout along Kalanianaole Highway nor the Kaiwi shoreline will be affected by the work. But during park closures, guests will have to enter those areas via the Sandy Beach end of the park, as the trail parking lot also will be closed.
Regular park hours are 7 a.m. to 6:45 p.m. (until 7:45 p.m. after April 1).
