Compost Tips At Halawa Garden
The Honolulu Board of Water Supply, in partnership with the Friends of Halawa Xeriscape Garden, hosts an instructional workshop on user-friendly composting from 10:30 to noon Saturday at the Halawa Xeriscape Garden.
The workshop will present easy ways to recycle kitchen scraps, yard trimmings, cardboard and newspaper to create compost – a nutrient-rich soil amendment. Adding compost to a home garden can help improve soil structure and texture. It also can increase the soil’s water-holding capacity.
Workshop instructors Kanani and Terri Langley will showcase an array of compost techniques. Participants will learn how to use and take care of their compost and how to use a compost bin. In addition, the instructors will demonstrate how to create a pre-cut compost bin, and participants can take home their own bins.
The workshop costs $5 for the general public, and there is no fee for Friends of Halawa Xeriscape Garden members. Advanced registration is required. To sign up, email tours@hbws.org or call 748-5363 by noon Friday. For more information, visit boardofwatersupply.com.
The Halawa Xeriscape Garden is located at 99-1268 Iwaena St.
