In an effort to promote local designers and artists, as well as brands that she enjoys personally, Julie Waters opened a store called Community last July in Chinatown.

“The concept is to have a space where local designers and artists can showcase their collections and be able to create the look and feel that they feel properly represents their aesthetic,” says Waters (pictured at left), who grew up and still lives in Kailua. “Also, they can use the space to do launch parties, line releases and events to create excitement to the collections.”

Waters, who has been a sales representative in the fashion industry in Hawaii for 20 years, says Chinatown’s creative energy and growth seemed to be the perfect environment for her store, noting that she usually participates in Chinatown’s monthly First Friday festivities with an in-store event.

Some of the brands available are Organik, Obey, Lost, Indah, Jens Pirate Booty, Black Swan, Lucy Love, Havaianas, Cameron Hawaii, Khush, Maaji Lingerie, Umee Honolulu, Big Buddha, Sati Gems, Kai Luxe Jewelry, Ola by Hawaiian Body Products, Kimi and Li Bikini, Mother Denim, Super Sunglasses and art by Jamie Allen and Kelly Patrick.

“The feel of Community is very comfortable and creative,” adds Waters. “We have men’s, women’s and kid’s apparel and accessories. There’s something for everyone. We also have rotating artists every month, so there’s always something new to see and check out.”

Community is located at 22 S. Pauahi St. (across from Hawaii Theatre). For more information, call 523-0001 or visit it on Facebook and Instagram at communityhi.
