Bass Egg Cracks Big Sounds
It’s difficult to stand out in a sea of zillions of Bluetooth speakers, but the Bass Egg did just that at the Consumer Electronics Show earlier this year and, most recently, at Super Mobility Week. At first glance, it looks like it could be any Bluetooth speaker (in the shape of an hourglass), but really, it’s not.
Bass Egg actually is a vibration speaker, which means it creates sound through the surface it’s sitting on. When you hold it in your hand, you can hear the music coming out, but it’s soft. As soon as you set it down, you hear Bass Egg’s full glory. It’s really just simple physics — what surface you put it on plays a significant role.
Larger surfaces, such as your dining room table, produce richer sounds. Don’t even bother using concrete, stone or bricks, because they will just absorb the sound and you won’t hear much. Wood, plastic or glass are the most ideal surfaces, and I would recommend using the hood of your car — this sounds pretty awesome, and is perfect for your next tailgate party.
I get the best sound out of hollow surfaces, such as a cardboard box or even the box the Bass Egg comes in. Have fun with it and double up. Putting the Bass Egg box on top of my wood dining room table makes it sound amazing. I noticed that glass seems to bring out the higher pitches better. It doesn’t always help to turn the volume up all the way if you’re looking for full sound. That can bring on echoes and strange vibration sounds.
Bass Egg only weighs about a pound, is just more than 3 1/2 inches high and will last you four to 10 hours (depending on the volume). The charging time is 90 minutes.
