Basket Brigade To Heal Hunger Pangs

Kaneohe Community Family Center will stage its “Baskets of Blessings” from 8:30 a.m. to noon Saturday in King Intermediate cafeteria with the goal of bringing food and cheer to needy local families for Thanksgiving.

The fifth annual Kaneohe service project welcomes more volunteers to help pack and decorate boxes and baskets and make cards for area residents.

Also welcome at the site are monetary donations, non-perishable food items, clear shipping tape, cellophane tape, wrapping paper, $10 grocery gift cards and “strong men” to move the cargo.

About 150 volunteers at last year’s campaign were able to assemble 400 food baskets for families at Kaneohe low-income housing projects, abuse shelters, schools, church-outreach and homeless programs.

“People would call in and request food – that’s why we started this,” said KCFC site manager Cynthia Okazaki. “We just did it. And people love to help because it’s a feel-good project all around.”

Sponsoring the “basket brigade” with KCFC are Community Works in 96744 and Hawaii Foodbank.
