Avid Readers Can Win Prizes
Residents who can read just one book a week for five weeks will earn a prize from “a library near you.”.
The state’s annual Summer Reading Program aims to get everyone in West Oahu to put their noses in books between June 2 and July 6, and registration begins May 28.
Children (infants through grade 6) who sign up will “Dig into Reading” and even get a hands-on gardening kit to inspire their curiosity about all things underground and under the sea. Teens (grades 7-12, plus 2013 graduates) will be vying for an iPod shuffle and other awesome tech incentives as they read “Beneath the Surface” (of the earth, ocean, history, etc.). Adults (age 18 and older) have a chance to win an e-reader as they thumb through “Groundbreaking Reads” on all topics.
The Friends of the Library and dozens of foundations and corporations are backing the summer program with prizes and funds, some of which will underwrite lively performances by storytellers and artists.
