August Ahrens Ohana Tackles The Trash At Oneula Beach Park
About 70 students, parents and teachers of August Ahrens Elementary School conducted a community cleanup at Oneula Beach Park in Ewa Beach last month, scouring the beach and park area for trash.
The event was coordinated by the school’s Youth Leadership Academy, which is designed for students in grades 3 to 6 to encourage civic responsibility.
“For the teachers and students, this community service project is part of a science unit that focuses on Hawaii’s environmental issues as well as learning how to preserve and sustain Hawaii marine animals,” explained third-grade teacher Lori Ann Muraoka.
The event was sponsored by Matson and over-seen by the city.
