Annual Hula Festival Comes To PCC
Hula halau from all over the state, and as far as Japan, will convene Saturday at Polynesian Cultural Center’s 24th annual Moanikeala Hula Festival, set for 10 a.m.-2 p.m in its Pacific Theater.
The festival honors the late Aunty Sally Moanikeala Wood Naluai, who was PCC’s kumu hula from 1963 to 1980.
While the event was originally a children’s competition with cash prizes, today it is strictly exhibitory and showcases modern- and ancient-style practitioners ranging in age from keiki to kupuna.
Last year, 17 halau participated, and the kupuna solo competition debuted.
The event also launches the Laie attraction’s yearlong series of special cultural events.
General admission is $10 for ages 12 and older, $6 for ages 5-11. For more information, call 293-3333 or visit polynesia.com.
