Ambitious Coastal Cleanups On Saturday

Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii will coordinate a Mauka to Makai Cleanup at Kualoa Ranch from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, gathering volunteers to clean up a myriad of locales before reconvening them for a festival at the ranch.

Beach cleanups are planned at Kalama Beach Park, Kahuku Beach & Golf Course and Laie Beach. Surfrider Foundation, KUPU, Kahuku Body Boarders, Ocean Devotion Hawaii and Kailua Sailboards and Kayaks are helping in the effort.

Spreading further into the ahupua’a, Sustainable Coastlines is teaming up with others to assist with native plantings with Papahana Kualoa, loi maintenance with Kako’o Oiwi, stream restoration with Hui o Ko’olaupoko or fishpond restoration with Paepae o He’eia.

Buses leave Kualoa for the sites at 9:15 a.m., but volunteers also can meet crews at the cleanup venues. Participants also will receive a free shirt from Hurley and lunch from Whole Foods (while supplies last).

Everyone will reconvene at the ranch at 11:30 a.m., just in time for a noon festival that includes vendors, keiki activities, education and a concert from Late Ones and Dread Ashanti.
