Dance Spectrum Hawaii studio will present “Life Is Your Dance” this weekend in Paliku Theatre at Windward Community College.

Showtimes are 7 p.m. Friday, 1 and 7 p.m. Saturday and 5 p.m. Sunday, featuring ballet, tap and dance to a wide arrange of music, both classic and contemporary. General admission tickets cost $15. For more information or to purchase tickets, call 254-3116 or visit dance-spectrumhawaii.com.

Founded in 1989 by Barabara Jean “BJ” Van Scoy, who has been teaching professionally more than half a century, the Kailua studio currently is run by Van Scoy and her daughter Tania.

The studio provides professional training in classical and contemporary ballet, pointe, lyrical, several types of jazz, tap, and dance appreciation for children ages 3 to 5 (pre-pre ballet). Dancers from all over Oahu train at the studio, and they have competed both here and on the Mainland. The new Miss Hawaii, Skyler Kamaka, studied jazz with “Ms. BJ” until she was 12.

Ms. BJ is the consummate professional. She’s just an excellent teacher.

Kristen deClive-Lowe, who has two sons at Dance Spectrum, said: “Ms. BJ is the consummate professional. She is just an excellent teacher.” Liam, 12, has been with Ms. BJ for three years and studies ballet, jazz, and tap. Brother Oliver, 9, has been taking ballet lessons for two years.

“I look forward to going every week!” said Liam, “Ms. BJ is always professional and all about driving for excellence. She really makes you want to be better.”

“In order to be successful with your business you have to love what you do,” said Tania Van Scoy. “Dance is our passion, and we want to be able to share that with our students.”
