Overall what did you think?
Brave was entertaining, lively and visually stunning. Pixar’s fairy tale set in 10th century Scotland won’t be considered among the finest works by the computer animation powerhouse that created classics like Toy Story, Monsters Inc., Finding Nemo, Cars. However, it still should do well at the box office this summer. I liked the fact the movie featured a female lead – a first for Pixar – in young Princess Merida (voiced by Kelly Macdonald), who is being groomed by her mother to be the next queen.
Merida is courageous, adventurous and independent with a huge head of red hair as fiery as her spirit for life. Brave is the first princess movies I can recall that doesn’t feature a clear love interest. In fact, the choices Merida has vying for her hand are hardly princes or charming.
I would recommend getting the popcorn and grabbing a seat early because one of the highlights actually comes before Brave even starts with a delightful short called La Luna.
Without giving away the ending, what was one of your favorite scenes?
My favorite scenes were the more simple ones highlighting the relationship, interaction and tender moments between Merida and her mother Queen Elinor. The competition between rival clans for Merida’s hand in marriage was memorable, as was seeing bare bottoms in a Disney movie. When’s the last time that happened?
On a scale of one to four stars, what would you rate this film?

What did you think of the cinematography?
The detail in the animation was impressive and lifelike. You can see everything from the moss on the trees to the strands of Merida’s hair.
Was the message/theme clear?
There were several messages and themes in the movie including family, love, fighting for what you believe in and forgiveness.
Did it remind you of any other work in film?
It sort of reminded me of Braveheart meets Mulan.
To whom would you recommend this movie?
With some violent and darker scenes, I think the movie is better suited for older children or tweenagers. For younger children like mine – around the kindergarten age – the movie can be confusing or scary at times. Dylan and Sophia were startled during the scenes featuring the evil giant bear named Mor’du. Sophia, who is almost 4, closed her eyes for a couple scenes. Dylan leaned over during the movie and whispered, “Why is Mor’du so mean? He’s scary.”
Did any of the actors stand out?
The triplets were cute and mischievous.
Did you identify with any of the characters?
I have a big appetite and belly similar to King Fergus.
Would you buy this movie when it comes out on DVD?
Nope. Sticking with Netflix.
What’s your favorite movie snack?
Fresh popcorn with mochi crunch (kakimochi). For the kids, they like plain popcorn with fruit punch and Reece’s Pieces.
On a different note, what’s new with you?
I’m just finishing up an intensive real estate training program with one of the top Realtors in Hawaii – and just in time. With record low interest rates, the market on Oahu is definitely heating up. I’ve had the privilege of helping numerous families buy and sell homes this year. Things are getting even busier as we enter the summer months, and I can’t wait to see what’s next and help my clients accomplish their real estate goals.
