Area Students Win Alger Award

Two Campbell High School students have been recognized for their commitment to education, dedication to community service and strength of character in overcoming personal obstacles to achieve academic excellence.

Darius A. Kawewehi and Azmera Hammouri-Davis received the 2012 Horatio Alger Hawaii Scholarship, totaling $5,000 each, which will help with college tuition, books and on-campus room and board.

Other recipients of the scholarship include Jocy-Anna S. Chevalier of Waianae High School, Emma N. Koa of Kamehameha Schools and Krystal L. Seymour of Farrington High School.

In addition to the college grants, the 2012 Horatio Alger Hawaii scholars also will receive guidance in financial aid, which will help them prepare for and select a college.

The Horatio Alger Hawaii Scholarship is sponsored by the Suzanne and Walter Scott Foundation, which provided $25,000 to five local students.

The Horatio Alger Association has provided more than $300,000 in scholarships to local high school seniors since 1990.
