Bonsai Club’s Tiny Plant Fair June 14
Plant enthusiasts might want to miss the forest for the trees this time — in this case, the tiny bonsai trees that will be at the Pacific Bonsai Club Plant Fair from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. June 14 at Kilauea Recreation Center.
Club members will sell plants and display choice bonsai from their private collections at the annual event.
Hawaii’s bonsai tradition is thought to have begun with the first labor immigrants in the 1860s. Many bonsai were destroyed during World War II, but the hobby rebounded after the war, thanks to the efforts of Soboku Nishihira and Haruo Kaneshiro. Today, Hawaii Bonsai Association oversees most bonsai clubs —including Pacific Bonsai Club.
