Junior Lifeguard Signups
Hawaiian Lifeguard Association, Kama‘aina Kids, Na Kama Kai and North Shore Lifeguard Association are teaming up to improve water safety among West Oahu keiki.
The Oahu Junior Lifeguard Program hosts seven one-week sessions at various locations, including Makaha Beach Park for Session III (June 22-
26) and Session VII (July 20-24).
(A North Shore Junior Lifeguard Program runs simultaneously at Ehukai Beach Park. Register at northshorelifeguards.org.)
“The junior lifeguard program is a tremendous service for the entire community, and I’m proud of how these four community-minded organizations have stepped up to support it this summer,” stated Hawaiian Lifeguard Association board member Ralph Goto, former director of the city’s Ocean Safety Division. “Our young people will be learning lifesaving skills from many of the state’s best in ocean safety, skills they will use whenever they are in the water.”
Following the junior lifeguard programs, participants qualify for the Oahu Junior Lifeguard Championships July 25 at Waimea Bay to test their skills in a series of lifeguard competitions including a beach run, surf swim and paddle boarding.
Winners from that competition will move on to the State of Hawaii Junior Lifeguard Championships Aug. 1 at Hapuna Beach on Hawaii island.
According to Goto, many junior lifeguards put their training to use and have saved numerous people in Hawaii’s waters.
Cost for each Oahu Junior Lifeguard Program session is $100 per child ages 12-17, and scholarship opportunities are available.
