West Oahu Roundup – 4/29/15

Several West Oahu children won their respective categories in the 2015 Toyota Hawaii Dream Car Art Contest. Winners include Kaneolani Elementary’s Alex Kainuma (under 8), Ewa Elementary’s Isabelle Toribio Juan (8-11 years), Kapolei Middle’s Mina Hua Tsou and Leanza Maratita Toves (12-15 years), and Ewa Beach resident Rizelle Mar (people’s choice, 8-11 years). These students came out on top in a pool of more than 800 entries. Winning designs will move on to the Toyota Motor Corporation World Contest in Japan later this year.

Island Insurance nominated two West Oahu principals March 28 for its Masayuki Tokioka Excellence in School Leadership Award. The winning principal will be chosen April 30 at the Public Schools of Hawaii Foundation dinner. Nominees are Mauka Lani Elementary’s Shelley Ferrara and Kanoelani Elementary’s Stacie Kunihisa.

Pearl Ridge Elementary’s Tierra Nakamura of Aiea has been selected to represent the state as junior ambassador at the 27th annual Asian-Pacific Children’s Convention in Fukuoka, Japan. She is among six 11-year-old students chosen for this recognition. According to the organization, its goal is to strengthen international relationships between children.

Jeff Minster of Pearl City has joined Honolulu Property Management as property manager. He is responsible for selecting quality tenants for owners, coordinating maintenance and enhancements for properties, and overseeing all communication among owners, tenants, associations and vendors. Minster has worked in the real estate industry since 2009 and previously was assistant property manager at Oishi’s Property Management.

Aiea’s Brandon Sparks has been promoted to Honolulu Community Action Program’s information technology manager. He now will oversee all IT functions for the agency. Sparks brings to the position 10 years of experience and started with HCAP in 2007 as IT specialist.

Zachary N. Tanaid of Pearl City attended a Marquette Action Program spring break service trip through Marquette’s Campus Ministry. Tanaid, a senior interdisciplinary international affairs major at Marquette University, was one of 12 students who traveled to Washington, D.C., to focus on urban poverty.

San Diego’s 12th annual Student Television Network Convention saw Waipahu Intermediate School take home top honors last month. The school’s team won third place for middle school spot feature.

Anthony Trinh of Ewa Beach has been hired as assistant service manager with Servco Toyota Honolulu’s Mapunapuna dealership. He will assist in managing day-to-day operations of the service department while delivering an outstanding customer service experience to all the location’s service customers. Most recently, Trinh was district service manager at Sears Holding.
