This letter is long overdue. I want to give sincere APPLAUSE to Alex of the downtown post office at Nuuanu. I sent a package of muumuu to my friend in California who loves to dance hula although she is totally blind. It happened there was an error in the address, and it was Alex who helped me recover the package. She went out of her way and even called me, although it was not yet office hours. Going back and forth to California and Hawaii, the package was torn, and it was Alex who repackaged it. She’s so nice and accommodating. Mahalo!

Postal clerks like Alex are under a lot of pressure to process a never-ending, frequently challenging stream of customer transactions. A big mahalo to the Parks and Recreation workers, volunteers and community participants who make the Diamond Head Complex Easter Egg Hunt at Kaimuki Park very enjoyable. Last year was the first time that I took my son. I was always afraid to go to these events because of crowds and disorganization. But this was well-organized and very pleasant. Another one is coming up! Jon Hennington, PIO of Department of Parks and Recreation, says this year’s Diamond Head Complex Easter Egg Hunt will be held at Kaimuki Community Park Saturday, March 28. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. The hunt begins at 10. The age groups are: age 2 (children must be able to “hunt” by themselves), ages 3-4, 5-7 and 8-12. Good luck to your son in the 2015 Easter egg hunt.

I want to thank everyone who put on the annual Senior’s Valentine Dance at the Blaisdell Exhibition Hall. This was my first time attending, as I accompanied my 81-year-old mother. She got all dressed up and danced with HPD officers. I have not seen her giggle like that in a long time. It was sad to see so many more women seniors than men seniors, but I guess that’s the way it is. It was a great event, and I am so happy to see that the Parks and Recreation Department cares about our kupuna in such a special way. And mahalo to you and all the guest dancers who take the time to do the Macarena with our seniors!

The Senior Valentine Dance is such a special event. It takes dozens of volunteers of each of the parks’ seniors clubs. This year, Honolulu Police Department graciously supplied the “manpower” for the opening waltz, and many officers stayed to dance with these spunky seniors.

Last week you allowed me to give APPLAUSE to Army Reserve Soldier Harmoni Ramones with the 322nd Civil Affairs Brigade. She paid for my breakfast at Kamehameha Shopping Center after learning I was a veteran. I am overwhelmed by her response. I cannot tell you how much it warmed my heart. Mahalo to Harmoni, and to you for helping me learn her identity.
