Malunggay Fest Lauds Filipino Culture, Foods

Food, culture and community will be celebrated from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Leeward Community College.

The Great Malunggay Festival and parade aim to raise awareness about Filipino culture and celebrate its Hawaii roots. Community members will be part of the Royal Court, which will parade around the campus.

The idea of a festival and parade was conceived by “Uncle” Al Simbahon, who wanted to hold a family-friendly event for the Filipino community — and what better way to do that than with food.

Malunggay, (better known as calamunggay or kalamungay), is a staple in Filipino cuisine and a big part of so many of the culture’s comfort dishes.

In recent studies, it’s even touted as a superfood filled with nutrients.

Admission is free to the public and features food, craft and retail vendors, in addition to the parade and entertainment.

The festival also will offer booths sponsored by LCC’s Fil-Am student group “Kasama,” which raises funds to support students pursuing higher education.
