Hanauma Has Talks On Turtles
Hanauma Bay Education Program is into turtles this month, offering free weekly lectures for the public at the park by local experts and research affiliates.
Each free Sunday talk begins at 3 p.m. in Cynthia Bond Memorial Theater. For more information, call 397-5840. Still ahead are the following topics:
• Feb. 8 — “Marine turtle stranding impacts related to fishing gear interactions in the main Hawaiian Islands” with Sarah Alessi, Shandell Brunson and Devon Francke of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)
• Feb. 15 — “Captive Sea Turtle Management at Sea Life Park” with Jeff Pawloski, Sea Life Park curator
• Feb. 22 — “Migrating leatherback turtles enjoy winter
‘layovers’ in Hawaiian waters” with T. Todd Jones of NOAA.
The ongoing outreach seminar series is sponsored by the University of Hawaii Sea Grant Program. The initial February lecture, an overview of local turtle research, was held Feb. 1.
