Make Sweet Music With UHWO

UH West Oahu Band and University Chorus aren’t just for the student and faculty family at the university’s Kapolei campus. Community members also are encouraged to apply.

“Especially in this new year, joining the band or chorus is a great way to meet new friends and expand your community,” stated UHWO assistant professor of music Jon Magnussen.

“Although music-making has long been associated with improved mental focus and lower levels of stress, most people simply enjoy it because it feeds the soul as much as it feeds the intellect.”

Pearl City High School director of bands Chadwick Kamei teaches the University Band MUS 419 course, and all band members will receive UHWO course credit for the class.

Those eligible to participate include UHWO students, faculty, staff and community members with band experience; Oahu high school band junior or senior students participating in the Department of Education Running Start program that offers simultaneous high school and college credit or Early Admission program that offers college credit only; and state DOE teachers taking MUS 419 for teacher reclassification credit.

University Chorus, led by conductor Karol Nowicki, also welcomes new members for the new year for MUS 114. Community musicians also are welcome, in addition to UHWO students, faculty and staff.

During the course, members will sing selections from the Renaissance to present day, as well as work on improving vocal technique, musicianship, and listening and ensemble skills. The ability to read music is not required.
