Last November, HHL Holdings donated $5,000 to help Habitat for Humanity provide housing for local families. Then the business took that act of service a step further when staff members, along with family and friends, assisted in the construction of five homes in Kumuhau Project in Waimanalo, as part of Habitat for Humanity’s “Sponsor for a Day” program.
The nonprofit hopes to provide everyone in Hawaii with a place to live by working with potential homeowners.
HHL Holdings is the parent company of Honolulu HomeLoans Inc., Honolulu Property Management LLC and Xpedite LLC, and aims to give back to charitable organizations every year.
“Through the efforts of our corporate office, they coordinated a date that volunteers in the company could meet up with the crew at Habitat for Humanity and try to help out,” explains Honolulu HomeLoans chief production officer Andrew Kim, who also was at the volunteer day. “We also were able to learn a little bit more about the organization.”
Volunteers helped out by trimming and painting window frames, as well as painting interior and bi-fold closet doors. They also helped build and paint exterior home skirting.
In total, 11 HHL employees volunteered their time at the Nov. 8 workday.
“For me, personally, it was a really rewarding experience,” Kim continues. “Being in a setting where you get to participate in this activity along with the homeowners themselves, being able to work side-by-side with them on the houses being built, was a really gratifying experience.”
In addition to its Habitat for Humanity volunteer day and donation, Honolulu HomeLoans donated $2,600 and 258 pounds of nonperishable food to Hawaii Foodbank last month to usher in the Christmas season.
HHL Holdings donated $2,000 and staff contributed $600.
Kim says the fact that his employer is so focused on giving back has helped inspire him.
“This experience with Habitat for Humanity convinced me that this is an organization I’d like to personally support going forward in the future,” he says. “And I’d just like to encourage other individuals, who are motivated to try to give back in some way, to check them out.”
