Kailua, Marine Base Declared Storm Ready
Kailua and Kaneohe residents have nothing to fear the next time severe weather hits Oahu — Kailua and Marine Corps Base Hawaii both have been declared Storm Ready/Tsunami Ready for the next three years by the National Weather Service.
These two designations signify that the areas have met NWS standards for disaster preparedness, with systems in place that alert people to weather threats, monitor local weather conditions and educate the community.
Kailua Neighborhood Board chairman Chuck Prentiss affirmed to Windward Islander that the board’s Disaster Preparedness Sub-committee will continue to host activities — such as September’s Kailua Emergency Preparedness Town Fair — to keep the community abreast of protocol.
A public town hall meeting will be held Jan. 28 with the state and city’s emergency preparedness teams. For more information, call Claudine Tomasa at 783-5396.
