MOF Combines Surfing, Charity

Winter swells bring not only waves to the North Shore, but also a plethora of charitable events.

Mauli Ola Foundation (MOF), which uses surfing as a natural treatment for children with cystic fibrosis, offered a list of events to raise funds and awareness of the disease. The events are timed to match Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, which ran from Nov. 12 to Dec. 20.

“It’s my favorite time of the year,” said MOF vice president Kala Alexander.

“It feels good to end our MOF season during the Vans Triple Crown while the surfing world is on the North Shore.”

Events kicked off Dec. 6, when MOF surfers arrived at Camp Mokuleia for an Ocean Experience Day for cancer patients and survivors. MOF partnered with Ambry Genetics to help Hawaii residents face the challenges of cancer.

On Dec. 8, Pipeline Master Jamie O’Brien hosted the year’s final Surf Experience Day at Haleiwa Ali‘i Beach Park.

Finally, the foundation hosted its third annual benefit concert at Turtle Bay Resort Dec. 13, featuring a gourmet dinner along with entertainment by Perry Farrell of Jane’s Addiction, DJ Joachim Garraud with Etty Farrell, Donavan Frankenreiter, Makua Rothman, Mike Love, Paula Fuga and Tahiti Mana Dance Troupe.
