No Smelly Odors With Bokashi

Board of Water Supply and Friends of Halawa Xeriscape Garden invite the public to a hands-on workshop to learn the basics of bokashi composting.

The session is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. to noon Jan. 17 at Halawa Xeriscape Garden.

More than 30 years ago, Japanese microbiologist and organic farmer Teruo Higa first discovered bokashi, an alternative to traditional methods of composting.

It’s a process that doesn’t emit odors or require bugs, but instead utilizes a mix of natural microbes called “effective microorganisms.”

Jan Nadamoto will lead the workshop, which will explore how bokashi works and various ways its mix and byproducts can be used.

Workshop fee is $10, or $5 for Friends of Halawa Xeriscape Garden, which includes instruction and guidance, as well as one pound of bokashi mix, which will be ready to use about two weeks later.

Registration for the workshop begins Dec. 30 and closes at 2 p.m. Jan. 16, or when all spaces are filled.
