Maritime Training At Marimed

Aspiring sailors in need of training can turn to Marimed Foundation’s free fall course in Maritime Careers Exploration, designed to give Native Hawaiians hands-on experience and instruction for work on the high seas.

Classes run Oct. 20-Nov. 21 in Kaneohe at Marimed Foundation’s ship SSV Makani Olu, with occasional field trips to other areas on the island. Students will meet from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays.

The foundation reports that 14 graduates from the summer session obtained paid internships, and companies hired six others.

The program is for those who want ocean and outdoors work in the education, science and environmental fields, or people with an eye for Coast Guard, military and merchant careers. Topics include Hawaii’s maritime history, shore-based operations, marine security, emergency procedures, CPR certification, shipboard living and more.

The course finale is a week-long voyage aboard Makani Olu. There also are internship opportunities.
