Where and with whom did you see the movie?
I saw the movie at Consolidated Theatres (Koolau 10) with my husband, Jay Pahed.
Overall, what did you think?
I thought that the movie was mainly going to be an action-packed Denzel Washington movie (Washington plays the role of Robert McCall, a simple, regular worker who turns into a Robin Hood who helps the unfortunate — in this case, brutalized and unfortunate people). Instead, it was very refreshing and it turned out to be a feel-good movie, even though it had a lot of violent scenes.
Without giving away the ending, what was one of your favorite scenes?
Robert McCall realizes that his talent could help many unfortunate individuals by coming out of retirement as a former CIA operative, and he will be exposing himself to harm.
On a scale of one to four stars, what would you rate this film?
I would rate this movie ★★★ 1/2 because I am a little squeamish when it comes to bloody scenes. My husband would rate this movie ★★★★ (or higher) because he likes to watch action-packed movies. He said that this is one of the most action-packed movies he has seen this year.
What did you think of the cinematography?
It was very professionally done — every action scene was very realistic. The explosion scene looked authentic and real. The scene selections were very timely.
Was the message/theme clear?
The message throughout the movie was that good people will step forward and can surely overcome evil, regardless of the price that has to be paid.
Did it remind you of any other works of film?
It reminded me of other Denzel Washington films: Unstoppable, Man on Fire, Training Day and American Gangster, as well as Liam Neeson films like Taken.
To whom would you recommend this movie?
Anyone who enjoys a movie that has a positive message and can accept violence on the screen.
Did any of the actors stand out?
Of course, Denzel Washington is one of my favorite actors. Anything he does is great, and I have seen almost all of his films. A special recognition should go to Robert’s arch-nemesis Nicolai, played by Marton Csokas.
Did you identify with any of the characters?
Yes, Robert McCall because of the good deeds he did for people. I always like to think that there are people in this world who are willing to do good for others.
Did the soundtrack contribute significantly to the film?
Yes, absolutely, because it is a great action-packed film with realistic sounds: explosions, car chases, weapons being fired and sirens, just to name a few!
Would you buy this movie when it comes out on DVD?
Yes, because we like action movies and thought that we would like to see it again, just in case we missed anything.
What’s your favorite movie snack?
Popcorn is always my favorite thing to eat at the movies and it is very addicting, especially with mochi crunch! Get the large bag for free refills!
On a different note, what’s new with you?
At A Cup of Tea we launch the holiday season with a Scones and Tea night Oct. 10 and 17 from 6 to 9 p.m. This will be a fundraiser for the Toys for Tots drive, and we are one of the donation drop-off points here in Kailua. Our elaborate holiday decorations will be up from Oct. 10 to the end of December featuring the ever-popular Nutcracker Suite for our holiday parties!
